DOCUMENTARY HISTORY

t the same time, however, photography explored reality in ways the works of the traveler-artists did not. Documentary photos caught the humiliation of Indians dispossessed of their lands and freedom and recorded scenes of stark reality in a way that would not appear in painting until the Mexican mural movement decades later.

The San Antonio Museum of Art has a large collection of photographs by Hugo Brehme and Augustín Victor Casasola taken during the Mexican Revolution that demonstrate the unique documentary and artistic strengths of photography. The Revolution had a profound impact on painters and photographers alike, as both groups turned to subjects of social injustice.

Photography has a strong tradition in Mexico, Brazil and Peru and encompasses fine art as well as documentary photography.
